Yvonne de Jong and Thomas Butynski are National Geographic grantees working to track down what may be Africa’s least understood large animal, the Desert Warthog.
During a survey of warthogs in northern Kenya, National Geographic grantees Yvonne de Jong and Tom Butynski encounter olive baboons in the very dry region east of Lake Turkana.
The population size and geographical range of the cheetah have declined dramatically during the past 50 years . Kenya’s common warthog, thought to only be active during the day, appears to have ‘swapped’ its strictly diurnal lifestyle for a nocturnal one. In the desert environment of central northern Kenya, food is scarce and there is no drinking water for several months at a time.
