King penguins breed on the subantarctic islands in the northern-most reaches of Antarctica and South Georgia, as well as some of the more temperate islands of the region. Their total population is estimated to be 2.23 million pairs and is reported to be increasing. Photographed here in Fortuna Bay (South Georgia)
