African sacred ibis breed in sub-Saharan Africa, SE Iraq, and are noted in historical records in Egypt, where they were venerated and often mummified as a symbol of the god “Thoth”. They occur in both inland and coastal marshy wetlands and mud flats, visiting cultivated land and rubbish dumps.
