Some odd years ago you made it through your high school geography class, but what do you still remember? The names of all seven continents? Check. All fifty state capitals? Easy. How about the name of the present-day country for which you must travel through to visit the ruins of Persepolis, the ancient ceremonial capital of Persia?
Our 2012 National Geographic Bee competitors would know.
Meet this year’s contestants- over 50 students, grades four through eight, who have worked tirelessly to ever expand their geographic knowledge in order to bring the title of GeoBee Champion back to their home state.
Each year thousands of schools in the United States participate in the National Geographic Bee using materials prepared by the National Geographic Society. The contest is designed to encourage teachers to spark student interest in geography and increase public awareness for the subject in their community.
Today kicks off the first round of questions followed by the final showdown on Thursday in which the 10 remaining contestants will battle it out until a champion is chosen. The 24th Annual National Geographic Bee, hosted by five-time Emmy Award winner Alex Trebek, premieres Thursday, May 24th, at 8PM et/pt on National Geographic Channel and Nat Geo WILD.
Rally behind your home state and check out the winners representing your state!
And just in case you’re still wondering, the answer to the question above is Iran.
