"The Ledge: An Adventure Story of Friendship and Survival on Mount Rainier", by Jim Davidson and Kevin Vaughan, published by Ballantine Books/Random House, July 26, 2011.

Descending from the summit of Mount Rainier one day in June 1992, Jim Davidson fell through a snow bridge, dragging his climbing partner with him into a hidden 80-foot deep crevasse. Davidson’s new book The Ledge, named one of Amazon.com’s Best Outdoor & Nature Books for 2011, tells the dramatic story of how he witnessed his partner’s death and survived the fall, making an impossible climb up a sheer ice wall.

Jim has taken that experience, and others from his many years as an active climber and rescuer, and helps others overcome adversity in life.

Now Jim is coming to National Geographic headquarters where he will give a live presentation about his experiences and the lessons he’s drawn from them.

    You’ve probably been asked a lot of questions about your time in the crevasse, but at what point did you decide to escape? And did you use the loss of your friend to deliver you from impending doom? Or, was it family? Both? What drove you to climb up that sheer face unscathed?

    Have you thought for a moment not to help your friend and leave him or her alone trying to survive yourself? How Challenging is helping while you are suffering yourself?
