How Tall Is Mt. Everest?

No one can agree.

The exact height of Mt. Everest has been disputed since the first measurements of the peak were made. The broadly-accepted height of 8,848 meters was first recorded by an Indian survey in 1955 – but there is disagreement on whether snow on top of the mountain should be included in the height. And there is another complicating factor: Everest may be rising due to shifting continental plates.  In May 1999 an American team used GPS technology to record a height of 8,850 meters – a figure that is now used by the National Geographic Society, although it has not been officially accepted by Nepal.  The Nepalese government recently decided to re-measure the mountain to solve the problem once and for all. Stations will be set up at three different locations using the GPS, and in two years we’ll have an answer.

Mt. Everest is the tallest mountain in the world, and keeps getting taller every year, because the 2 tectonic plates are still pushing together, north and south.

I want to give suggestion to the person/ team who will measure the height of Mt.everest, measure the height of K2 also and then compare them may be due to change of weither K2 will become more taller as it is mentioned that if the layer of snow will not count then it could be possible the synario will be change.

There should be a giant air filter put on top of Mt. Everest to clean the air of green house gases and other air impuraties.

It is interesting that peak of Mt. Everest is not the farthest from the center of the Earth. Due to the rotation of the Earth and the associated “bulge” along the equator, Mt. Chimborazo in Ecuador is “closest to the moon” and farthest from the Earth’s center.

Hasn’t the Nepalese government got other more important issues to concentrate on rather than trying to measure the height of a mountain?

I think that they will find that due to tectonic plate movement , as the article says, any true reading or measurement, will vary constantly. The true height will always be moot.
